Biography

I am an associate professor of early modern literature at the University of Stirling (you can find more about my academic work here).

I am a Scot, but my immediate ancestors are American, Russian, and Baltic-German, and I have research interests in all four areas. Since joining Wikitree I have been particularly focused on growing the site's coverage of the Russian and Baltic-German nobilities in the early modern and modern periods.

At present, I am Team Leader of the Baltic-German Team and am always delighted to hear from fellow researchers! I am also involved with the 100 Circles Project and maintain the free space page for tracking progress on European royal and noble pedigrees on Wikitree.

Dear Kelsey,

since I didn’t see any reaction from your side about the check-in message from May, I assume you don’t want to remain a project member. If I don’t hear from you within the next 14 days, I will then remove your Germany Project badge. If you do not wish for that to happen, please reply to the check-in message below or send me a direct message.

If this message finds you too late, feel free to re-request the badge by replying to our G2G join post.

Kind regards from Black Forest

Dear Germany Project member,

it's annual check-in time 2023. If you still wish to remain a member of the Germany Project, please reply to this post, by stating this intention. If we don’t hear from you in the next 30 days, your membership badge will be removed. In this case please don't be offended ... you're welcome to rejoin at any time. Please also note, that in order to receive help, with researching your German ancestors, membership is not mandatory. Just ask your questions in the G2G forum and tag them with Germany in order for knowledgeable people to see them.

If you wish to remain a member, we would like to learn more about your perception of the Germany Project in order to achieve a future development according to our members needs and wishes. For this, we created a survey, which we kindly ask you to fill-in.

In case you want to communicate, discuss and receive help about WikiTree in German, you might want to check out the WikiTree category at Compgen’s Discourse as well as the German Discord server Ahnenforschung.

Of course there’s still the official WikiTree Discord server, where we usually talk English. Feel free to learn more about Discord and the server at Help:Discord.

Thank you for connection the Czech branches of WikiTree more closely! I have spent the last few months searching for a better connection and YOU did it!

Thanks! It was more good luck than anything. Tomáš kindly gave me access to some twentieth-century profiles which provided the final link between the Czech branch and the Anglo-American part of Wikitree (though even then it was anything but straightforward finding a point of connection).
Hi Kelsey,

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Could you find someone to adopt Elena Romanovna and add the pre-1500 dates? Thanks!

This is well within my sphere of interest so I'll take Elena Romanovna on and improve her profile tomorrow.
That's great! I learned after my presentation at Wikiconference North America about the conflict report on Wikidata for profiles that are linked to multiple WikiTree profiles (and vice versa), so I've been doing some tidying up. I'm not knowledgeable about pre-1500 folks myself.

Fascinating! Feel free to send any more German or Slavic folk my way and I'll get them sorted.
Hi Karen - just a quick note to say that I've fixed the profile you sent my way. As is often the case with early Rurikids, it was quite a hash but I think I've removed the extraneous nonsense and gotten it back to something approaching the current scholarly consensus: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/%D0%93%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%8F-1.

Hello to my newly found relative. Thank you for all of the time you are giving to ancestry research. It has helped many of us connect to our ancestors and the fascinating history surrounding each. You provided my connection to William Orlando Butler. 💙 I have also started my Watson, Femyer (French), Swallow, Wolford (German) ancestry searches.

I certainly enjoyed learning more about you from your biography and the spotlight honor details. I am in my infancy with ancestry research. I appreciate learning about the tools you have used. That information will most assuredly be added to my research tools arsenal and propel me to the toddler stage. Thank you. With sincere appreciation, Sharon

Cousin Kelsey, great highlight feature for you on Wikitree. My other cousin Wesley Miller (Miller-64890, see our connection at Slatton-166) ) and I are attempting to monitor and provide citations for the Surname study, which spreads our work among the families including the ones that you and I and Wes do not belong, but I my aim is to emphasize the quality of evidence instead of a massive uploading of names without proper evidence. I am just dipping my toe in, but we have already experienced questionable "contributions" from what appear to be name-collectors from online trees.

Wes is almost certainly your cousin as well, since we calculate that our ancestor John (Slatton-51) carried the same yDNA as your probable ancestor George (Slatton-30). Wes, however, shares no patriline with us as his connection is from a female. It is not likely that I will have time in life to cite the thousands of individuals from our project, so providing a solid foundation and removing uncited "contributions" of unproven data is my main goal. I will be dropping in my chapter on your ancestor, edited specially for WikiTree, and seeing your feature reminded meto do that. I will let you know when that is done, and because I have had some pushback from some of your relatives about the name of William Riley's father, I will expect you to adjudicate on differences of opinion. I have a dead left thumb from cubital tunnel syndrome, so typing is a problem for me, expect me to take my time editing because typing is a particular problem for me these days.

Sherry Bain (below) is also a member of our project on Spokt and she contributed via a male to the yDNA project.

Thanks, Clinton! This sounds excellent and it's really good to hear that some of your wealth of information on the various Slaton families will be publicly available on Wikitree (I share your frustration with name-collectors muddying the waters, but it seems to be a perennial problem with any public genealogical database).

Was the pushback about Uriah's name related to the claim that he was "Uriah Taylor Daniel Slaton"? I've never seen him as anything but plain Uriah in primary sources and strongly suspect this is a later invention.

Yes, and I made note of the fact that Uriah is all that is solid, although one of the elders who wrote to you mentioned "Uriah W." Please go over the entry for William Riley and his wives, the third one is a mystery. I need your feedback that this is treated appropriately, especially the yDNA note. I also note that your parents are protected as living but your personal profile page shows your mother's name. I am not totally happy with WikiTree, but what's perfect? Glad to read that I have a brand-new cousin!

Check out the bizarre Slayton Family Project on WikiTree, started by a Brodie cousin who no longer responds, and populated solely by my great-aunt Lille Iva Slayton Brodie. Bob Brodie is obviously proud of his Scots heritage, and I know that at least one of the men he tags as a Scot is probably not a Brodie son. Talk about "sensitive information."

Thanks for this, Clinton. I've looked at the entry for Riley and it seems excellent. I've also added a bit to the biography for his third wife (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-532480), but have left some of your notes in place as I didn't want to delete anything without letting you know first. Her marriage to John Green seems very solid to me, but I've had no luck in identifying her Breshears husband.
Hello Kelsey,

According to Wiki-Tree we are 4th cousins, twice removed (I think) through Uriah Slaton's and Mary Stone's line. Our DNA doesn't show any long-strand matches though. We are also related through another line, surnamed Lewis. I haven't sorted that one in my brain yet. Good to meet my Scots cousin, and to have another academic in the family. Sherry Bain

posted by Anonymous Bain
Good to meet you, Sherry. The Slatons were a prolific bunch - I think they might account for my single largest group of relatively close atDNA matches. For the Lewis line, this looks doubtful to me. I think the parents of Daniel Lewis (Lewis-24156) are unproven despite what's on WT.
Hi Cousin Kelsey,

WikiTree says: Kelsey and Michelle are 9th cousins twice removed Kelsey Jackson Williams and Michelle Valent B.S. are both descendants of Simon (Jansz) van Arsdalen.

Hello cousin!

We are 7th cousins, twice removed with our common ancestor being John Lea Sr via my father and Alice (Martin) Bishop via my mother. Apparently my parents were 7th cousins and never knew it.

Hi Kelsey,

Thank you for posting newly discovered information about my grandmother, Hanorah Roman, and her family. It was all new to me! I did not know their family name had been Romanovsky. I always suspected it had been shortened, probably at the time they came to America. I have since discovered that some or all of this information is on familysearch.com. Are you aware of other sources? Regards, David Martin

Hi Kelsey!

I see you recently added a succession box and categories for Estonian Governers on some Swedish profiles.

You have, however, not added any sources to support these facts and since they are pre-1700 it is even more important to add sources to the profiles.
